Finding My Feet Again — From Soft Shoes to Hard Shoes

As a mom, comfort is non-negotiable. Between school runs, grocery trips, work, and everything in between, my feet carry me through full, busy days. For years, that meant one thing only: soft, cushioned shoes. If a shoe didn’t feel like a slipper, it didn’t make it into my cupboard.

But over time, something felt off.

Despite the comfort, I started noticing sore arches, tired legs, and lower back stiffness—especially after long walks. It felt strange. Weren’t soft shoes supposed to protect my feet?

Learning to Rethink “Comfort”

A casual conversation with a physiotherapist mom friend changed my perspective. She explained that while soft shoes feel comfortable at first, they don’t always offer the support and stability our feet need—especially when we’re walking longer distances.

Soft soles can cause our feet to work harder to stabilise themselves, leading to fatigue and strain. For moms who are constantly on the move, that extra effort adds up.

The Transition: One Step at a Time

Switching to firmer, more structured walking shoes felt intimidating at first. I worried they’d be uncomfortable or harsh on my joints. So I eased into it:

  • I started wearing hard-soled walking shoes for short walks only

  • I alternated between my soft shoes and supportive ones

  • I paid attention to how my body felt, not just my feet

Within a few weeks, the difference surprised me. My posture felt better, my walks felt more stable, and the end-of-day aches started to fade.

What I Noticed Most

  • Less foot fatigue after long walks

  • Better balance and support, especially on uneven surfaces

  • Reduced back and knee discomfort

  • More confidence walking longer distances

The shoes didn’t feel “soft,” but they felt right.

A Gentle Reminder for Moms

Motherhood teaches us to prioritise everyone else first—but our bodies deserve care too. Something as simple as choosing the right walking shoes can make a big difference in how we move, feel, and show up each day.

If you’re considering making the switch, remember: it doesn’t have to be sudden or extreme. Start small, listen to your body, and give your feet time to adjust.

Because when moms are supported—right from the ground up—we move through life stronger, healthier, and with a little more ease.
